hi i'm currently in grade 11 i was thinking of taking advanced functions/gr 12 law/canadian&world issues in summer school i'm taking advanced functions right now at school and i got a 83 for mid-term which is not good enough to go to the univiersities that i will be applying to: (
if i can pull my mark up to high 80s...or low 90s hopefully: i won't be taking adv func at summer school
if so, should i take law or world issues? i haven't taken gr 11 law...so will it make it be very hard for me to get a good mark in gr 12 law? i only want to take these courses so i can get a good mark (low 90s preferably..) my friend told me that law isn't all that easy would it be better to take world issues? :S is there anyone who took world issues in the summer? how was it? and how was the class average? generally high as in high 80s ?
i have another question. i signed up for 8 courses for grade 12 i'm thinking of dropping family studies to get a spare would it be better for me to just keep family studied because i know that i'll fool around during my spare?
thank u in advance!!
p.s. i want to get into accounting waterloo is my number 1 choice... i wanna get into afm but i'll still try for math/ca i'm gonna apply to UofT, york, western, queens...waterloo and i think that's it:|
pps my school doesn't allow us to take english in summer school unless it's a repeat thing: ( they don't allow english/math/science courses they don't count that as a credit.. i think we can go to a private school and pay to get an english credit there althought it would be expensive.. would it be worth the money? because some english teachers teaching gr 12 english are just...eeks horrible one of them had a doctors in english and i heard that he marks superduper hard:|

oh so you want to get into AFM? AFM-PA is way more competitive than AFM-FM (PA accepts like 80, and FM accepts 160).
If you have 85+ average you have a chance, try getting some ECs, and remember that you'd have to do well in AFFMA. I have never taken summer school, and I would never take something in summer school that i'll be studying in university.

take english in summer school!! thats wa im gona do. leave courses like math and the sciences for day school because its much easier to get 90s+ on them because its either u get it or u dont. for english u might get a teacher that wont give anyone above a 85.
and also only take 6 courses next year because thats all universities are going to look at. if u take more than that then its a waste unless u need em to graduate.

You don't need a grade 11 law foundation to take grade 12 law. They deal with two totally different topics. Grade 11 is more domestic whereas Grade 12 is more international. Only a few common things will be mentioned such as habeus corpus, charter of rights etc, but they reteach you all that.
World Issues is an easy course to take in day school, alot of writing, but I ended up with a 90% in the course.
Math and Sciences I would say to save for day school as well. Only take a math if you're plan is to take all three, since having 2 maths in one semester of day school can be insanely stressful s evidenced by some of my friends.
English in summer school is the best bet since it's shorter, more condensed, and there's not as many writing assignments, or at least that was the opinions I got from 3 different years of students when they did it heading into grade 12 (by that I mean the high school graduating classes of '06/'07/'08)

yeah you definitely don't need 11 law for 12 law. i took 12 law (and loved it, btw) in grade eleven without the grade eleven version and ended up getting one of the highest marks in the class---they deal with completely different issues

Definitely take World Issues! That is the easiest course ever. Ended up with a 97%

But then again, you may want to save an easy course or two for the regular school year. Take a hard course so you can focus all your attention on it and get a good grade. Taking World Issues during the regular school year will help ease up the pressure with your other harder courses.

Where do you live? I live in Manitoba and we have online courses that high school students can take.. Those online courses are really really easy. I hav 100% in Law 40S rite now. Also, one of my friends is taking same course with me and we help each other to get good marks. I hope this info helps u a bit.

Unless you have english teachers at your schools who give out easy 90s, taking ENG4U in summer school is your best bet. Like other said, you don't need gr 11 law to take gr 12. World Issues is easy depending on the teacher. I got 90% as well with low to moderate effort in day school and I took this when I was in gr 11. About the family studies/spare thing. Take the spare. More than likely the projects for that course will end up being really time consuming.

English in summer school is definitely a good idea. Time consuming, but a good idea. My friends who have taken English in day school have all risked their acceptances because of lower marks. Some of them failed, and others passed, but their final mark was below the minimum average. For me, I am horrible at aspects of English. I got an 86% in grade 12 4U english, which is amazingly perfect for me! lol. I definitely recommend it.

I had an 85 final in ENG 4U which I took in day school. I compared that with the work and finals that two of my friends who took it in summer school and got 90s. We all had the same teacher, but their work was inferior to mine (they even said so). Moral of the story...take English in summer school, most times it will boost your mark over what you can get in day school. Teachers in summer school are more laid back and easy going than they are in day school. You may get one or two math nazis who think that because there's less time they need to make the course harder to validate something, but that's rare.

What is the point in taking all those courses?
I think you're pretty safe with taking six (or four even) bird courses plus English and math. If you can't get good enough marks in those courses, then do you think you'll be able to handle being in one of those elite business programs? Don't kid yourself.

My personal opinion is that it's very rarely useful to re-take a course that you got over 80 on on the first attempt. Going from 80% to 100% in one course only increases your top 6 average by 3.3%. A more realistic 10% boost is 1.7%. Given that some schools penalize for repeated courses, I don't think anywhere requires a mark of over 80% in any particular course, and that getting 95-100% is going to require a significant amount of work even for a repeat, it just doesn't seem worth it. Devote your time to more extra curricular activities or doing better in your other courses.
