i believe quite a few unis have reznet. it costs around $230 per year. i believe it has good technical support but getting rogers internet and splitting between 4 roomates comes up to 10-15 per month. thats 80-120. quite a bit cheaper than reznet. is rez net worth it??????
also i heard (from my unreliable friend) that there is a 500 mb per day cap on downloads. is this true?
basically is it worth it to pay more???

lol. rez net has a limit of 5gb per day and if you go over the first time, you get a warning. second time you're banned for 5 days. 3rd time .. 10 days.
anyways, my friends got rogers last year and opted out of rez net. i dont know how the download limit on rogers works (or if there is any) but even if you opt out of rez net, you can still use it in rez (they dont go through the trouble of disconnecting you)

One nice thing about being on RezNet is that you can download a program called DC++, which is like Limewire, except you can get a lot more stuff off it and it is A LOT faster. I remember one time (near the beginning of the school year when there were fewer users) when I downloaded a file at 15 Mb/s!

Is RezNet the same as ResNet? York has ResNet and I was wondering about this limit thing. ResNet has a limit of 20 GB/week of bandwidth. I have no idea how that works, but would I be able to download a game from the internet and play it? idk how much of the limit it takes up or even if I understand what bandwidth means?

That includes both general internet browsing and downloading of large individual files. That's a fairly generous cap; only the people downloading tons of torrents are going to rub up against it. Checking on Bell, my 3 month average is about 15gb per month although I've used about 25gb this month. I am not a light user but I'm not super heavy either. I don't believe there's much in the way of individual games out there that are bigger than about 10gb, and if you are talking about a simple "casual" game then you are looking at much, much less. Network access is not an "extra" at all schools. It also may be the case that you can't get internet access from anywhere else.

Bandwidth is a measure of the quantity of packets sent to and from your client. Basically, it's how much data is allowed to be sent and received per given time period. When highspeed internet first came out, there were absolutely NO RESTRICTIONS. But ISP's soon realized that alot of customers were downloading files non-stop thus causing them to lose a considerable amount of money so they put a generous cap. 20GB/week is monstrous.To download a high-end MMO takes about 1.5GB at max, The online gameplay for a high end MMO is transmitted at no more than 45kb/s. Let's estimate a good 20 hours a week of gameplay, 20*3600*45/1000^2= 3.24GB That means you have at least 15GB+ of bandwidth left to download. Note: Websurfing takes such little bandwidth that it's incredibly miniscule to look at.

Yeah, I'm curious too how you manage to get over 100gb without torrents. I suppose you could use other methods of peer to peer downloading that aren't torrents (I don't even know what's around these days...), but that's a bit of a technicality I often have internet radio running, I do a lot of general web browsing, I frequently watch streaming videos online, and I do some torrents (but not constant torrents like some, I download one or two things in a week). I occasionally download large files like game demos. Skimming through the past year, the most I've used in a month was slightly over 40gb, and there's been a couple months at or below 10.

How can you figure out how much GB bandwith you use? Just so I know where I'm at. I usually download music on LWire daily, download a few movies on torrent once a week, watch tv and movies online, and play WoW and America's Army online at least 4 times a week for about 3 hours or so.

Is it safe to use torrents on rezenet? I generally use private trackers. Also, do they throttle the speeds for torrents and games.
Also, does anyone know what's the bandwidth cap at Queen's?

I know there are programs out there that can keep track but I don't have any particular recommendations. Example (and look through the comments for other suggestions)I was reading it off of my Bell account. UWO's reznet limit of * Limit total on-campus downloads to no more than 5 gigabytes per day * Limit total Internet downloads to no more than 1 gigabyte per day is fairly restrictive though. On a per month basis, that's not bad; but there are things (even perfectly legitimate things) that would put you over 1gb on the odd day. I would hope that they don't really cut you off for downloading a 2gb file one day with low to moderate usage otherwise, but the wording of that site suggests that they do (you'd have to ask a Western student to know if they really do cut people off who go over once and are usually well under, it could easily be a discretionary thing).
