So, along with what seems like a million other grade twelve students across the country, I'm trying to decide whether to go to Queen's Commerce or Ivey.

Queen's and Comm. specifically, makes it extremely easy and appealing to take a semester or year abroad.

Ivey also says that you can go on an exchange in HBA1 or HBA2, although it seems a bit ridiculous considering the fact that you're only there for two years anyway, and you'd want to make the most of it and learn as much as possible.
So what I'm wondering is if any of you have heard of Ivey AEO students (or any Western students, really) taking an exchange in second year in order to get as much out of Ivey as possible, but still gain some international experience.

I'll probably be contacting Western/Ivey about this soon but until then, I was hoping the reasonably well informed users of this forum might know a thing or two.
thanks

Do you mean a university-exchange (study at another university somewhere else in the world) or an international work placement?

Yeah sorry I should have been more clear... I mean an exchange in which you study at a university somewhere around the world.

you can go on exchanges for the last part of hba2 i think it was, about 1 in 6 people do it because youre only at ivey for 2 years and most people want to be there for the full 2 years, theyre trying to encourage more people to do it

Yeah, well I know you can do an exchange in HBA2.. I'm just wondering if you can do it before you actually START Ivey... As in you're AEO or even any other Western student.

Hi Harris,

I have a friend that's in Ivey and he's in 4th year (or HBA2). He went on exchange but he could only go in the last semester. He went to Spain (can't remember which university) and would only be coming back early summer, and he's actually skipping his convocation because his term does not end in time (European schools end later). He also told me that he wasnt able to take a couple of courses he wanted (and I wont be surprised because your program is already a short 2-year program), but he still enjoys it as a whole. I dont know if you can go on exchange before you start Ivey (I think you can because at Queens you can go abroad in yr 1 in arts/sci), but if you do it'd prolly not be a business school exchange.

In terms of quality etc going on exchange vs. paying staying in Canada and paying Ivey, there are some validity in thinking about this. I am an international student at Queen's and I had the option to go on exchange. However, I decided not to because:

1. I am already an international student - kind of "on exchange" already!
2. If I was to apply and go to the exchange schools directly, I'd pay less than what I'd pay for Queen's. I'm sure that this applies more to Ivey... I remember that if I'd go to Beijing for university by myself I'd only pay in the region of CDN$3,000 - which is definitely far different from the current tuition.
3. Most Queen's people who go on exchange find classes easy abroad, and most exchange students coming into Queen's find it very hard (these are students from top schools around the world). Unless you've never had international experience before, going on exchange doesn't provide additional 'academic' value in a strict sense - as the quality of classes are already very high here in Canada.
4. If you decide to stay in the country instead of going on exchange, you don't lose out. In all 3rd and 4th year classes at Queen's, a fairly good sized proportion are international exchange student - and it does make the class super interesting.
5. However, people love it big grin - and people do go on exchange, and I'd highly recommend people go. And you may know this, Queen's runs a really top-notch exchange program in Canada and you do get tons of bursaries and support to go abroad (bursaries to pay for your flights, accomodations, etc). And people have a LOT of fun backpacking, travelling, etc - and meeting other students in neighbouring countries and going off to places. So if you decide to come to Queen's - you'll be able to do a lot if u decide to go on exchange.

Hope that helps.

I also wanted to add another commie who lived on the same floor as me went to Beijing for exchange for half a year, got a job at HSBC, and actually worked at HSBC helping to start off their new direct banking product in Asia (HSBCDirect), and instead of coming back in the fall, he stayed an extra "semester" to work at HSBC, and Queen's was able to accomodate that into his program (he's still graduating this year). So if you land up having a similar opportunity like that Queen's can definitely accomodate that for you.

(He's returning to HSBC this year as one of the 15 associates in their international management team that were hired this year from around the world - so he basically now will be going to countries everywhere helping local HSBC offices manage their operations on an assignment basis)

I went to Western a few weeks ago to take a tour, and I had a meeting with one of the admission officers of Ivey HBA.
I'm also really interested in going on exchange during university, especially because I'd like to possibly work in Asia.
Anyway, the person told me that the most common exchange opportunity for ivey is during your HBA2, last semester, and that most people don't take this opportunity because they've worked so hard to get the whole ivey experience. So I asked if there were any exchange opportunities while you are an AEO student, and basically, she said that would have to be sponsored by UWO, and not Ivey.
A lot of the benefits we get from Ivey ( job positings, exchanges and such) are really only available once we actually get into the Ivey program (3rd year). This is due to the fact that students in Ivey actually pay the expensive tuition for the program, and that aeo students are still just Western students.
Hope that helped!

Alright thanks.

I was just checking out the Western website and it has a page about exchanges. Supposedly they want you to do them in 3rd year.
I'm wondering if they'd potentially let a student do it in second year, even second semester if they're AEO and has clear intentions to enter Ivey.
I guess a phone call or email is in order.
