To become a lifeguard, what exactly did you have to do? I'm looking into finishing my training... but for the final courses, did you jave to tkae the instructor courses as well? or is it just up to the National Lifeguard Service training? Because if so, I only need 3 more courses...

Can someone in Ontario outline exactly what you need to have to become a lifeguard. I use to take swimming lessons at the YMCA but stopped. I always hear about bronze cross, nls...etc.

To become a lifeguard, you need: Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid / CPR-C, NLS That qualifies you as a lifeguard. Note that there are different versions of NLS - pool, waterfront, I think there's one tailored to water parks as well. Many employers (e.g. City of Ottawa) will want you to also be qualified as an instructor. The details of what the City of Ottawa wants are here. The city is of course not your only option. I personally worked for a company that managed pools at apartments and condos. $15+ an hour is not universal for lifeguard pay. Ask around and figure out how much you can expect to get in your area. A few years ago the City of Ottawa paid something like $10 to start; while it's probably up a bit I doubt it's over $15. At the same time, at one point my cousin in Surrey BC was looking at taking the courses and they cost a lot more there than they did in Ottawa. I very briefly looked into it at Acadia but they paid crap, like, somebody I knew was a deck supervisor and made $8 per hour (NS minimum wage at the time was maybe $6).

Okay, thankyou for that! When I was looking into the courses it said that I needed to complete the teaching courses as well, but I don't want to be an instructor... if only because I can't afford that yet. So thanks for the information!!!

$18/hour is pretty beastly! I don't know any Ontarian lifeguards who make anything above 15.

holy crow. Toronto/GTA area usually pays like... $9~12/hr... typically around $10.50 just for lifeguarding and then $12~$16ish for swim instructing depending on where you. It gets higher if you get your Examiners qualification or if you're teaching AquaFit classes (more qualifications). I'm teaching piano instead now ($15.50/hr) Meh..
