They're very reputable for their customer service, however I've never had any issues with the exception of a few texting and roaming charges from a few years ago and they were very co-operative with my problems. To cancel with Telus, you have to pay a fee of $20 for every month you have left remaining in your contract. The amount I would have to pay is close to $700 so it's not even worth cancelling in my opinion.
My parents warned me that I'd be responsible for paying my phone bill when I'm away at school just as I am now, and where I'd be getting the money to do so is far beyond their comprehension (they think I'm retarded for some reason). I figured I'd get a part time job. But still, the amount of money I pay monthly is ridiculous! As far as things are going for me... -I'll work all summer until end of August (either 1 full time, or 2 part times) -NOT work on my first semester -try for a casual part time (like 2 evenings or 1 evening and one full day) job my second semester -either come home (ew) to return to my old jobs in the summer break, or (PREFERRED >>) stay in Ottawa and work there while rooming with friends who may be doing the same (yay for shared, and thus quite low rent! (200-300 max a month?))

Need to soak up the uni-life and don't want to waste your time working? I'm Toronto-bound(hopefully) and the cost of living downtown is ridiculous so back to Niagara it is for me lol. Lucky for me, I'm a server at a well known restaurant and they do transfers within the company so I'll get a transfer out to one of the restaurants in T.O. and I should be good for a few nights a week.

karyy wrote:wow.. how did you manage to hagger it down that much!? what did you sayy?? my plan is a discounted plan already but it includes so little stuff, it's $18 + the 6.95 + 0.50, so a total of $25.50 minimum each month, but i also text (pay as you go) so that's always extra and sometimes i go over on minutes. so typicallyy, it's around $30ish per month. my plan includes: 200 mins per month, free weekends (no free evenings). ps - any tips on how to get free text msg-ing? Hey, you just call and pretend you want to cancel your account, just say "Cancel account" at the beginning, if you are with Rogers that is how it works. Then ask the person how much it is to cancel, they will tell you, and you tell them to cancel it. They always say "Well, why do you want to cancel", you lie and say "Well, I have had a lot of bad service with Rogers" or "I am a student on a tight budget and I need to save money", or "If I switch to Bell, I can get a better plan with more features" and they will ask you what they can do to keep you. If they say, okay I will cancel your account, don't worry, you have 30 days to call back and reverse it. I recently called back and changed my plan 200 daytime minutes Unlimited evenings and weekends Unlimited Rogers to Rogers calling 500 text messages 50 video/picture messages Caller ID Voicemail $36 all included.

I personally use my iPhone with the Pay as you go. I don't use my cell phone a lot so i save a lot of money this way.

What do you do with your cell phone plans once you move away to university? Do you have to renew your contract? Change numbers? Is there a way to keep your number but be local around the city you're moving to and make home calls long-distance? Would it be better to cancel your contract and start a completely new one/switch to pay-as-you-go?

Yes Rogers did actually buy Fido, but they still are different companies, just under the same umbrella. you can't just go to one company and expect em to have the customer files of another companie

It's the signing up for the plan that ties you down for 2-3 years. Not the receiving of a new phone. If you're not interested in being tied down to a plan you should consider pay as you go billing or phone cards. I think thats different than monthly plans.

I actually don't have a cell phone. I might get one soon though, there's a neat new company that's a sublet of Telus that caters to broke arses, aka students. 25 bucks a month for 100 minutes, unlimited evenings/weekends (at 7pm) and unlimited texting. There's some really cheap add-ons too, but if you want to keep your bill as low as possible, be cautious about getting these add ons. Ohyeah, it's called Koodo, you've probably seen the creepy commercials.
