So instead of studying for my calculus test in a couple hours I tallied up the number of times each school was mentioned :\
and voila :

1. Waterloo (13)
2. U of T (12)
3. UBC, McGill (9)
4. Western, Guelph, York (5)
5. McMaster, Queen's, Ottawa U (4)
6. Trent, Ryerson (3)
7. Dalhousie, Laurier (2)
8. Mt. Allison, SFU, OCAD, Saskatchewan, Brock, Laurentian, Lakehead, Carleton (1)

Lol. Despite how unscientific this is, I think it reflects a few things. :S
This kinda mirrors a few rankings out there so I guess either we are totally persuaded by Macleans, Globe&Mail, etc; or those published rankings are pretty up to snuff.

I'd see it as odd that you said these mirror other rankings except for the bottom 3 levels. Queen's is rated higher than guelph or your consistantly, and ottawa,.. oh and mac. UT, UBC, and Mcgill are ranked highest usually, being the three internationally recognized schools. In one ranking (i forget which) Western seemed to be ranked first for everything, tied for 5th here is odd. Finally, waterloo is never ranked first, except possibly in pure math or engineering, but I hear UT has them beat in math anyway.

In those published rankings waterloo is down with mac and guelph, Queens and Western above, then the big three.

Well, I really did mean overall. This thread isn't really the ideal place for a sample, and though I can't recall exactly.. Actually I just got out my Maclean's magainze from Last November to check...

National reputational ranking:

-Best overall-
1. Waterloo
2. McGill
3. Alberta
4. Toronto
5. McMaster
6. UBC
7. Queen's
8. Guelph
9. Sherbrooke
10. Western

I think it has mimicked what the people here have said so far. Even though I don't agree perfectly that Waterloo should be #1 per se... that's what Maclean's said in their last issue and a lot of my friends suddenly seems to think Waterloo is all that, and it did come up the most in this thread up til that point (No offense at all to Waterloo. I do think it is a great school with awesome programs, I've just got my own bias).

And I know Western and Queen's usually does the best in Globe & Mail's student survey thing.

Edit; I think York and Ottawa U and Guelph don't really belong in the same tier as Western, Mac and Queen's - but I think they came up as much because of school spirit maybe? I'm surprised at the lack of turnout for Queen's fans...

Maclean's is bogus...

eg. UofT doesn't cooperate with them, and suddenly their no.1 streak on the ranking drops to no.4... Coincidence? =/

Many schools didn't co-operate, not just U of T.

1 We are from Mac! 2 A little bit louder! 3 I still can't hear you! 4 more more more...

And Waterloo has been the best overall school for so long, even when UofT cooperated with them.

Yes, but for UofT to boycott the ranking after being ranked #1 for 12+ consecutive years sent a strong message (since it obviously wasn't sour grapes), and was the reason why so many other universities also dropped out of the ranking. There's a big difference between UofT boycotting the ranking and Queen's.

Yes, I was looking at globe and mail's uni rankings, srry. Ya tho, that ranking was a reputational, like a questionaire about, which one has the best rep, not which is the best. Even that makes little sense though. Through my uni search, I haven't found waterloo with the best rep for anything...

It's tough to decipher any of these, theres way too much bias involved, and no one can really tell you, cuz they've all been to one, and only one.

The Times Higher Education Supplement ranks McGill 12th in the world and 1st in Canada, and 1st amongst the public universities in NA.

I knew that, except N/A... but I guess that's my ignorance of the states. Is this because all the real schools in the states are private?

In no particular order, UofT, UBC, McGill, Waterloo, Alberta, and Queen's are definitely the tops when you look at all the surveys out there. UWO and Mac definitely get honourable mention though.

^ i think that's a pretty fair assessment. especially since (for once!) the person didn't mention their own university as in the top ranked spot

I'd say it depends what kind of experience you want. Its not about going to the best university, its about going to the right university.

I chose McGill not for its strength in engineering, but for the international renown, the diversity of the city, and the true Canadian experience.

Possibly. Government is nothing but unwelcome intrusion when it comes to higher education. McGill itself would do far better as a private institution.
