Serious question. I really, REALLY want to got to UWO next year and I am moving to Toronto in May to work for the summer but I know that won't be enough. And I really have NO idea how OSAP even works and how much I'll be able to get. I mean, my family doesn't make much and they have no savings for me to go to school but is it possible even so? I plan to work a whole lot this summer and I am saving what I make now but it isn't much I have about enough to pay my housing deposit right now. lol. I am just curious about how to fund my education in Canada because here in the states I already filled out my financial aid stuff and have gotten responses from the universities but in Canada everything seems to happen a lot later which is frustrating. I guess I'll just have to take out a TON of student loans, eh? sighhhh Western 2014 BMOS-Human ResourcesSaugeen (:

Trust me, I gone to a bunch of different financial aid offices to make sure I got the correct answer. I am surprised none the less. I am just thinking OSAP and working won't be enough because I am expecting minimal support from my family Western 2014 BMOS-Human ResourcesSaugeen (:

I'm also receiving very minimal funding from my family and will be going to Western next year. I have been saving since I began working and have about $10,000 in the bank - which is obviously not enough. I also have some scholarship money (hopefully) depending on my average. Look into that. Look into bursaries offered by Western as well.
I'll have to take out a student line of credit as well. A LOT of students do. It's nothing new! Talk to some Canadian banks and inquire.

I really wish that I would have saved more of my money earlier in my high school years; I am really kicking myself for it now I am trying to keep my average up so hopefully I can get some type of entrance scholarship, I have around an 89 right now but I think they will look at my final GPA will be around a 3.45 unweighted which is nothing stellar. I am planning on applying for bursaries too as soon as I figure out how to put down my step dad's foreign income on the form. haha. But hey...Western 2014 nonetheless, I am determined! Even if I am broke the whole four years (: Western 2014 BMOS-Human ResourcesSaugeen (:

Yes, many people can afford it. Don't qualify for much OSAP? Get a bank loan.

Dont worry about it Ontario has the student access guarantee which states that OSAP will work with the uni to ensure you have the funds necassary to pay for tuition.Go on the OSAP web site and go through the grants and bursaries to see which ones you may be eligible for,Im sure you will be able to pay for it.

And as much as I love Austin, because of the top 10% rule(where if you are in the top 10% of your class you are automatically admitted to ANY State university in Texas) they try to drastically cut the frosh class down by making it impossibly hard. And I know i won't get in, I am in the top 11%. FML. lol. Western 2014 BMOS-Human ResourcesSaugeen (:

Thank you, that is encouraging! It is mainly my mom that is making me worry so much. She just doesn't think I am going to be able to pull it off but then again she knows nothing of OSAP or loans or anything; she went to Carleton back in the day and lived at home so she had no debt when she graduated. But then there is my dad who has graduated with a PhD from Cambridge(Although he doesn't make a lot of money, he's an InterPol professor in Wales) who is pushing me to go to Western. Blah. Parents. lol; that sucks( the top 11 % thing. If they had a rule like that here i would have worked even harder, all i know is i'm somewhere in the top 20% the other day when i was filling out one of those budget calculators, i think my heart skipped a beat. Seeing how I've applied for more scholarships than anyone in my school or that i know, I feel hopeless on that part. My parents cant really help me right now so i'm looking forward to being in debt for at least two -thre years after grad. and lets not factor in grad school
All we can do is hope that OSAP will be nice this year after canceling the Millennium scholarship

My parents can't do much either and those budget calculators just make me scared. lol And I haven't really applied for any scholarships because I am stuck in the states til May and my grades aren't really all that great. They're above average, but not remarkable. Western 2014 BMOS-Human ResourcesSaugeen (:

You will find a way to pay for university. Money isn't everything. If it was, I'd be going to York ;) University of Western Ontario 2014Social Sciences and Ivey AEO

Sometimes seeing someone else's breakdown may help. I only have to use one parent's income for OSAP because they are not together and that is why I get so much, but where it says "OSAP", you will likely be able to get a bank loan for the same amount
First year costs = $18K - OSAP entitlement, $12K - Entrance, need based bursary, $3.5K - Summer savings, $1K - Loan from aunt & uncle, $4K
Total: $20.5K (had ~2K left over)
Second year costs = $16K - Leftover savings from first year, $2K - Summer job between first and second year, $3.5K - OSAP entitlement, $12K - Tax return = $1K - Need based bursary = $700
Total: $17K
Third year costs = $16K - Leftover savings from second year, $1K - Summer job between second and third year, $4.5K - Work study job (part time), $1.5K - OSAP entitlement, $12K
Total: $19K
Fourth year costs = $18K - Leftover savings from third year, $3K - Summer job between third and fourth year, $8.5K - Work study job (part time), $1.5K - OSAP entitlement, $10K
Total: $23K
So I have ~$5K leftover at the end, I will owe OSAP ~$26.5K and my aunt and uncle $4K.

thats good $46K from OSAP but only 26.5 not 28 back. And 8.5K job sounds pretty nice. Well i did some number crunching and if you work the full 16 weeks then its an okay pay. Just curious what job did you do an how long did you work for?

That was very helpful. Hopefully I get a decent amount, but who knows. My parents aren't together either and my mom doesn't work so it's just my step dad's income I have to report and the crap child support we get. Western 2014 BMOS-Human ResourcesSaugeen (:
