Hey, I'm a grade 10 and i'm looking for some tips/advice on how I could get some scholarships. I live in Markham and I have an average of 92.6 . I have about 10 hours of volunteer and I am in my schools jazz band.
What are my chances of getting a scholarship by the time I'm in grade 12? How can I improve them.
EDIT: I also work part-time as a carrier. Should I ditch the job and work on volunteering?

What are my chances of getting a scholarship by the time I'm in grade 12? How can I improve them. First things first: Get more volunteer hours. And, don't just get them from one place, go to different places to get them, coz a lot of scholarships are about volunteer work, what you learnt from each of the places you volunteered and stuff. I did not apply at a lot of places coz I did not have many volunteer hours and stuff. Also, get more extra curriculars, MAINTAIN that great average in Grade 11 (it's gonna be a hard task, and try doing all the volunteer thingy in summer vacation and grade 10, so that you can conc. more on studies in grade 11). Hope that helps EDIT: Oh, and a lot of scholarships asked me to write essays, but I didn't coz I am a lazy bum, just don't make that mistake, coz I am regretting it now. Moreover, keep tabs on the scholarships AND their deadlines, I missed a couple of them coz I didn't know what the deadline was.
Goodbye!!!

Leadership is (almost) everything. Get involved extensively as a role model in your school and your community, become an executive on student council, start a club, fundraise for something, ect. Build strong relationships with your supervisors so that they'll write you an excellent reference letter. Definately maintain that average. Also, see if you could even raise it! Anything is possible. Good luck!

I realized that I have over 500 hours from one place and its not worth it. Its better to volunteer at different places every year to a minimum of 3 different places. Good luck!

EDIT: I also work part-time as a carrier. Should I ditch the job and work on volunteering? Yeah, what some of the other people have said are really true: get many many more volunteer hours, and get them from many sources! And where possible, run for executive positions in local clubs and organizations, they will help your scholarship chances as well. I'd say get 400+ volunteer hours by Grade 12 and its a nice amount to be working with! If you're aiming really high, definitely try to diversify your interests and volunteering areas. To an extent, having executive positions and hundreds of volunteer hours is almost a "given" for the big scholarships (Loran Award, TD Scholarship) - I was at Loran Nationals and seriously, it was common to be Student Council President, or Grad Council President, or Yearbook Editor-in-Chief, etc. and what made you stand out wasn't what you did (because everyone has done so much) but why you did it and what you worked for (have a cause!).

Nick: Have some diversity, but look out for possible themes as well. That will help you with essays I think, and help you when you have to explain why you did it. If you have activities that don't have any connections, people may think that you just did it so you can put it on your resume.
S-Class: You are a Loran finalist? Congrats! Were you in the sponsored pool? Would you mind sharing your ecs and stuff? I am curious because I entered through the sponsored pool but didn't get anything. Thanks.

Hi yilin! Thanks! Yea, I was sponsored by the school (that was actually the first test, we had 5 students wanting the 3 sponsored slots)! Just to note for anyone interested in the Loran Award in the future too: my Grade 11 average was exactly 85% IB Diploma (jumped to 90% IB in Grade 12 though), and I still made it through all the way to Loran Nationals, so don't worry about your grades too much when applying for the Loran, its more about your ECs, and your academics are merely a "check-off box" for them - does he/she have good grades? Check, and at that point academics no longer matter to them. I don't want to hijack Nick's topic, so I'll PM them to you! If anyone else is interested as well, just PM me! Much later edit: I ended up being upgraded to the full Loran Award recently - I will enthusiastically receive any questions and inquiries on the Loran process! I will not help you win it, that's up to yourself, but I can give you a push in the right direction.
