Somebody asked that question at the Scholar's Electives presentation this past weekend, and I'm pretty sure the lady said that 99.9999 percent of the time the s.e. students come straight from high school. I'm not sure what the exceptional circumstances are though. Don't quote me on that, if you're super interested I'm sure you could get detailed information be calling them. UWO Social Science 2014

Last year there were about 700 applicants, and they accepted 50 students. I think I found out in early April through the UWO Scholar's Electives website, and then received a letter a bit later. questionsforeveryone wrote:Oracle wrote:Mia wrote:I can't give you an exact number since I'm taking a lot of full year courses, but it's between 3.9-4.0 Geeze. Do you study a lot? Jesus. How does one maintain a 3.9-4.0 alongside a demanding research schedule? Mia. Describe your Western experience in term of academics difficulty. Academically speaking, the material is a bit harder than highschool, there is a lot of information thrown at you in a small period of time, and it's important to understand and be able to apply any of it. So, you will probably find that you are spending more time per course preparing/reviewing/doing homework than you did in highschool. However, if you have a solid understanding of the material, and spend enough time preparing for exams, it’s certainly possible to do well. Personally, my biggest concerns were 1) university was going to be really stressful and exhausting, 2) I would procrastinate and leave stuff until the last minute, or not have enough time to get everything done. Fortunately, neither of those has come true…I rarely feel stressed out, and you will probably find that you have a lot more free time to get stuff done. Also, because you are in an environment that is so condusive to learning, you will hopefully feel more motivated to study. With that said, I definitely spend a lot of time in the library...and many of my SE friends do too. However, it's still possible to do some extracurriculars, get a decent amount of sleep, and have a social life. I really stand by what mynameismattgotmlgo has said numerous times on SA - doing well in university has a lot to do with discipline and managing your time well, rather than just being super smart. There's the option to apply to the program during first year, and then start in second year. However, I haven't heard of anyone in the program who has done that. I wouldn't believe chances of being accepted are that great either....it already ends up being a bit of a hassle to pair up every single SE student with a professor, which makes me think that they would prefer not to increase the intake. (Just my observation though; I don't know the inside deets and how they decide how many to accept!). Relax...they said 2nd week in April. Depending on how you count, its not quite the second week yet.
Give them time. No rush.

lol well oracle did email, so you can take his/her word for it. On the website it says mid april, but it is outdated, as it refers to mid april 2008. I don't think a call would make much difference. Although, I remember getting an email back in March saying to expect an acceptance or rejection during the "second week of april". Not sure what dates they're implying by it, april is a confusing month lol
