I'm bassoonist in grade 12, and I'm looking to continue playing throughout university but not in a course. Does anybody at McMaster/Queen's know if there's a demand for bassoonists? And would it be possible for me to rent a bassoon for the year to play in the orchestra/concert band? I've also heard rumours about bassoonists in the past who've gotten a free bassoon as an incentive to join the ensemble. Is there any truth to this?

It seems likely to me, although I don't know for sure, that at McMaster there'd probably be a demand for bassoons... I can't say if the school owns any that you could borrow, though. Queens is more like to have bassoon students, although you could audition for an ensemble and see if they put you in one. Your best bet with both of these would be to contact either the bassoon faculty of someone at the head of the music departments of both of these schools (a secretary or something would be ideal and could point you in the right directions if they can't help you). If the school can't loan you an instrument, try contacting a company like Long & McQuade or another music store and see if you can rent a student model bassoon for a few months, it probably wouldn't be thaat expensive. Good luck!

Fellow bassoonist!
Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely follow up on it in the coming weeks.
What school are you in right now if I may ask?
