It looks to many that work and school would be too much to handle at once.

With the exception of my first year of university, I have held a part or full-time job from the age of 14 til today! (I am 21). I am accustomed to making time for both school and work. Even though it is another thing to add to your responsibilities, I actually think it helped to manage my time, and make better use of it. If I knew I had a shift at work this afternoon, then I'd spend the morning wisely- studying or reading instead of browsing the internet. And as a student knee-deep in OSAP debt, having a bit of extra income each month helps ease the financial burden to come.

What is boils down to is how much you think you'll be able to handle, and how much you need the help (financially). You can always try it at first and quit if it seems to be too much. Just don't budget your year based on being able to work part time, and it will just be a little 'bonus' if you can manage it.

I would say about 1/3 of my friends (majority upper year university students) are working part time. Mostly at bars or restaurants, some TA'ing on campus.

I am now working about 15 hours a week and I am trying to keep up with all the school work and study that I have and on top of that to keep my volunteer work on the go. Sometimes I getr stressed out but it does help you learn how to manage your time well.

The school work / work load can really pile up. I suggest not having a job during your first year so you can get a feel for the courses and your study habbits. Get good grades and consider it for your second or third year.
Im in my third year and just got a part time job. I rearranged my schedule so that I only had classes 4 days a week and worked on the final day (friday) that still leaves the nights and weekends for studying and doing course work.
The extra 50 or so bucks really helps.

i dont think i will work my first year.
i have had a job since i was 11, and i know how to manage my time, but for my first year since i will be living so far away from home i really want to concentrate on making new friends, my school work, keeping up my grades and just handling my whole first year experience.
my second year tho i think i will definitely get a job!
the extra money will be nice since i have five years to go!
and plus, i have from April till sept to save on summer jobs as well.

I'm going to get one. I'm going to take maybe a few months of not working for my first year just to get the hang of it and then in January I'll try to find one.

Yeah, it let's you test the water first. You don't want to jump in there with both a job and school and find out that you can't do it. I did the same thing in high school- took grade 9 off and got a job in grade 10.
