I applied for, and was accepted into Katimavik. But unfortunately being under the legal age at the time, I needed my parents permission and my mom refused to sign the form : (

Most of this knowledge off the top of my head is three years old, so best to check the official website for details!

Katimavik is a government sponsored volunteer program, where you spend nine months in three different areas of Canada. You volunteer full-time in a service related field (e.g. anywhere ranging from volunteering in a public school, developing a website for a community centre, or helping out at a national park) and live in a house with 11 other katimavik participants and a group leader. Your expenses (food and board) are covered, and I believe you get a small bursary and allowance.

I later met a friend in residence who participated in Katimavik and said it was a wonderful experience. He also said, though, that it was really hard work.

Definitely check out the websites (especially the forum, if that's still up!) to see if the program is for you!
