We have pretty decent food at Mac. There's lots of variety from chinese places to a vegan/vegetarian places, and lots of halal/kosher items. We also have East Meets West Bistro which has won awards for the best dining hall in Ontario a couple of years in a row I believe. Mac food tends to be a bit expensive though, which is pretty common across the map at universities.

If you live in residence you are required to buy a meal plan, if you are in apartment style you can get a reduced one. If you'll be living off campus in your first year you can do without the meal plan just cook for yourself and save some money. For people living in residence, especially traditional style a meal plan is vital because its very convenient.

You can pretty much find anything you would want to eat somewhere on campus so the variety is really the thing that makes Mac food pretty good big grin

I heard that if you live off-campus, you can still purchase a meal plan if you want... but that's to your discretion.

yep you can. if you live off campus you can get either a full meal plan or you can place as much money as you want on your student card to spend on food purchases (you don't have to pay tax if you do that)

this is only for off-campus people. honestly, its not a great idea to get a full meal plan if you're living off campus. its a big waste of money. its better to just place a certain amount on your student card and use that to buy certain meals if you want to eat on-campus food. you don't get a refund of any money you don't spend at the end of the year and living off campus you wouldn't spend a full meal plan probably.

How's the pricing...I've heard that you don't get a lot of value for what you're paying. Also, how much money does it work to on average that you spend on food each day?

The prices are a little on the high side but not outrageous. It depends what your getting of course. The amount of money you should be spending a day on food depends on what size of meal plan you get. It ranges from $9 a day with the Light plan to $15 a day with the X-Large. I know it doesn't seem like a lot so you should be buying some groceries every once in a while if you think you need to eat more than that. Also you'll learn that drinks eat up your meal plan dollars very quickly.

There's a Barn in Westdale about a 5 minute bus ride from Mac which most students go to. It has great prices and variety. There's a Fortino's nearby as well.
